VGMA: Ghanaian Gospel Artistes Are Too Comfortable – Isaac Quarcoo
The 23rd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards that ended on Saturday and has as usuall received both positive and negative comments from the organization to the awards that were presented. Some of the comments gathered after the event were debates as to whether or who deserved the awards they received.
Ghanaian songwriter and techpreneur , Isaac Quarcoo was amongst the VIP’s who graced the event. He made some very serious statements after the event, especially concerning the gospel industry in Ghana. In his words, he said, ‘I seriously think there is a problem with our gospel fraternity. Why do we keep seeing the same faces every time receiving these awards? is it some magic trick we don’t know or my assertion that our gospel artists are too comfortable is actually true?”
“Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying those who got the awards did not deserve it or were otherwise favored by the organizers, all I am asking is that is the problem with the upcoming gospel musicians or the older ones are not showing them the way? Honestly because if you look at our gospel musicians today, it’s as if they are only interested in wearing flashy caftans to mount local stages in our local churches.”
“For proper reference, check the kind of songs we even make. It’s so sad how only Diana Hamilton, Joe Mettle, and Ohemaa Mercy are taking turns around Best Gospel Song and Best Gospel Artiste categories in all our major award schemes. Why should this be? Don’t we have abled voices in this country? Our musicians must rise above the local mentality and think big because it’s as if we don’t have a gospel industry at all and these award schemes just award a few who show their faces within the year under review”, He added.
