GRAMMYs 2022: History made as Maverick City Music performs on GRAMMYs & win an award

After making history as the first Christian or Gospel artist to perform at the Grammys in 20 years – and be televised while doing it – Georgia-based group Maverick City Music have now won their first Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.

Awarded for Old Church Basement which they recorded alongside Elevation Worship, Maverick City Music member Alton Eugene said in their acceptance speech, “this group was created for those who were marginalised, unheard and rejected in this space, to be heard and have a space.

“All of us, on this stage represent that.”

Chris Brown from Elevation Worship added, “I will never forget that little basement where this beautifully wild season between our two groups began”.

“It’s been the most beautiful thing watching our two ministries create something together that we could have never created separately,” he said.

“Every bit of what we do belongs to God. We’re honored to be a part of what He’s doing in the Kingdom,” Maverick City Music said on their Instagram page.

In the days leading up to the ceremony, they said on social media, “all the glory and praise goes to Jesus”.

“We truly feel that we have been placed here for such a time as this, and are excited to continue to share this journey with you all.”
